WHAT IS KHIT WEAVING? THAILAND’S ISAAN TEXTILE TRADITION EXPLAINED

In Thai weaving, a pattern is never just decoration. It carries memory, meaning, and tradition. Among the most iconic forms are Khit textiles, made using extra weft threads that stand out from the base fabric in a pattern that seems to float above it.

This brocade technique has been passed down for generations in Isaan, northeastern Thailand. It’s so stunningly beautiful that we wanted to share a few of these handwoven artworks with you in our shop.

HOW ARE THE BEAUTIFUL KHIT PATTERNS WOVEN?

Alongside the warp and weft threads, weavers lift additional pattern threads in a specific sequence at the loom. From that rhythm, they create the distinctive, mostly two-tone motifs, traditionally in red, purple, or deep green, though yellow, blue, and black on white are also loved, just like the ones in our shop. And believe us, choosing just a few combinations wasn’t easy. 

WHY DID ISAAN WOMEN WEAVE KHIT CLOTH BEFORE MARRIAGE?

It was traditionally an essential skill for young women in Isaan region to weave Khit cloth before marriage, to prepare fine pieces for their future household. Our partner and textile expert Pla also told us there were so-called “high motifs,” patterns that could not be worn below the waist. Those designs were reserved for cushions, ceremonial textiles, or temple banners, she explained.

Today, weavers use this language more freely, combining motifs in new ways, experimenting with colors, and adapting tradition to a modern audience without losing its essence.

WHAT DO KHIT DIAMOND PATTERNS SYMBOLIZE?

There are roughly 72 documented Khit pattern variations, most of them geometric. Diamond and geometric lozenge motifs are widely understood to symbolize protection and prosperity, and traditionally signified belonging to a specific village community.

In our scarf collection, you’ll mainly find intricately interlinked diamond motifs. They’re said to offer protection when draped over your shoulders, and a sense of belonging to Thailand’s long weaving tradition.
