Colors the Earth Gives: Plant dyes & the magic of handspun cotton

The art of dyeing is ancient. Long before chemical dyes were developed, people colored cloth with what nature provided: leaves, bark, blossoms, soil. Colors were more than decoration – they carried meanings, marked belonging, distinguished regions, and reflected a deep connection with the land.

This old knowledge is still alive in the Isaan region of Northeast Thailand. Here, cotton is still spun by hand, dyed with plants, and woven on traditional looms. Each shade emerges from what nature offers in that very moment – no color can ever be repeated exactly.

The same holds true for our SRP collection: We source directly from the weavers and receive regular updates about which shades are available. Once a color is gone, it’s gone – and may never return in the same form. Our partner Pla keeps track and maintains close ties with the weaving groups.

Nature’s Palette

Kaew – mustard yellow from tree bark
Fang – deep crimson from the bark of the fang tree
Linchee + Kram – olive green from lychee and indigo
Pradu – warm copper-brown from pradu wood
Kram – rich indigo, a Southeast Asian classic
Dam – black from natural earth or charcoal

Nature sets the tone: season, raw material, water, and light – all of these shape the outcome.

Handspun: Patience in the Thread

Even before dyeing begins, the yarn is created entirely by hand. Women organize the process together: spinning the cotton, dyeing it in large kettles, hanging it to dry, and finally weaving it on traditional looms. The result: unique pieces with a warm, characterful feel that we are proud to bring into our shop.

“It always takes a little time – but it’s worth the wait, isn’t it?”
— Pla, specialist for handmade cotton production, Thailand

Why it matters today

Plant dyes are not a short-lived trend but a cultural heritage. They connect landscape and craft, conserve resources – and carry forward a practice that would otherwise be at risk of fading away.
