Handwoven Seagrass Bags & Boxes, Made by One Family in Thailand

Our Krajood seagrass bags and boxes come from a small place on the Thai mainland, roughly level with Koh Samui. The family who makes them lives both there and on the island. Krajood is their business. All the women in the family work with the local material, which grows along riverbanks, and turn it into pieces that carry real beach flair for us.

And how is it made?

We could hardly believe our eyes when the women sent us videos. The whole floor covered in material, and in no time at all, with incredibly skilled hands, under and over, under and over, the finished pieces take shape. Take a look at our videos and see for yourself:

What is Krajood seagrass?

Krajood is a fine, naturally strong seagrass native to Southern Thailand’s wetlands. For generations, communities along the Thai coast have harvested, dried, and woven it into baskets, mats, and bags. It’s a craft passed down almost entirely within families, and it has always been a way for those families to add to their income.

The material is prized for a few practical reasons:

Naturally durable. The fibers are flexible when worked but firm once woven, giving each piece structure without added stiffeners.
Breathable and lightweight. Ideal for everyday bags and for the humid Southern Thai climate it comes from.
Biodegradable. A plant-based material with no synthetic backing.
Distinctively textured. No two woven surfaces are identical, since tension and rhythm vary slightly by hand.

How are the bags made? Hands, feet, and years of practice

Watching mother and sisters work is, honestly, mesmerizing. They weave with both hands and feet: one foot holds the growing weave taut and steady on the floor, while both hands move the seagrass strands with a speed and precision that only comes from decades of repetition. There’s no pattern pinned up, no measuring as they go. The structure lives in muscle memory.

The process is quiet and focused, almost meditative. Every so often, one of them looks up, a little shy about being filmed, not used to it, but clearly proud to share work they’ve done their whole lives.

A rough outline of the process:

1. Harvesting and drying the Krajood seagrass until it’s flexible enough to weave but strong enough to hold shape.
2. Hand-weaving each bag or box base-up, using the traditional hand-and-foot technique to keep tension even.
3. Shaping and finishing the woven body. Bag handles, box lids, and edges are completed by hand.

Why these bags look "boho beach," without trying to

The relaxed, natural, boho-beach look people associate with woven seagrass bags isn’t a styling choice or a trend SRP is chasing. It’s simply what happens when you combine this specific material, this specific place, and a technique that hasn’t changed in generations. The texture, the slightly irregular edges, the warm neutral tone: all of it comes directly from Krajood seagrass and the hands that shape it, not from a design brief.

Krajood beyond bags: the Spa Ritual Boxes

The same family now also weaves the lidded Krajood boxes used in the SoRarePieces Thai Spa Ritual and Little Ritual wellness sets. It’s the same seagrass, the same hand-and-foot technique, just shaped around a box form instead of a bag: a natural extension of a craft this family already knows inside out.

A small batch, on purpose

Our first Krajood pieces sold out quickly, simply because we’re working with one family weaving by hand, not a factory. More pieces are already on their way, but batch sizes stay small by nature of how they’re made. If you see a piece you like, it’s worth not waiting too long.

Frequently asked questions – Krajood Edition

Is Krajood seagrass sustainable?

Yes. It’s a fast-growing, naturally occurring plant material, harvested and woven without synthetic additives, and it’s biodegradable at the end of its life.

How do I care for my Krajood seagrass bag or box?

Keep it dry and out of direct sun for long periods to preserve its color and shape. Spot-clean gently with a barely damp cloth, and avoid soaking it, since seagrass is a natural fiber. Store it stuffed with tissue paper when not in use to help it hold its shape.

Where does Krajood seagrass come from?

Krajood grows in wetland regions of Southern Thailand, along riverbanks. Our pieces are made by one family with roots on the Thai mainland, roughly level with Koh Samui, and on the island itself.

What makes each piece slightly different?

Because every bag and box is woven entirely by hand, without molds or machine tension, small variations in texture and shape are normal, a sign of the handwork, not a flaw.
