Our pieces travel a long way – sometimes from remote villages, sometimes through tropical heat, often carried by local couriers before they begin their journey by air.
Because of this, there can be temperature changes and occasional humidity, and we want every item to arrive safely.
For that reason, we sometimes use protective plastic sleeves where it’s necessary to shield your piece from moisture during transport.
We try to keep plastic to a minimum and kindly encourage you to reuse it whenever possible. Besides that, we choose paper and cardboard packaging certified as sustainable, and every order is wrapped by hand with care.
Yes, absolutely — and it’s free. If you’d like your order wrapped as a gift, just send us a message at hallo@sorarepieces.com and we’ll prepare it for you with care.
Every gift is individually wrapped by hand, using materials from the regions where our pieces come from — for example handmade mulberry tree paper or natural jute from Thailand.
Soft, natural, personal. Never overdone.
Let us know how you want it to feel: Would you like your name mentioned as the sender, or should it stay a complete surprise? Just tell us — we’ll wrap it the way you want. 💛

We source our pieces through a small, carefully built global network that has grown over many years — with partners from Portugal to the Caribbean, from Kenya to Southeast Asia. Most of them we know personally: people who practice their craft with pride, dedication and often under challenging conditions.
And yes — sometimes it all begins very simply: We travel somewhere, meet someone, talk with hands and smiles, touch fabrics and wood, meet the grandmother, pet the family dog… and somehow we leave with ten beautiful woven bags and the whole story of the village!
Their stories, ideas and traditions inspire us — and we carry the most beautiful ones forward. To you. Because every piece holds a piece of the world.
For us, “handmade” means authenticity made visible. Real craftsmanship, textile artworks shaped by skilled hands, and materials that come directly from nature.
This also means: Our pieces are not meant to be perfect. They are allowed to carry traces — in their material, their form, their story. We don’t believe in mass production. We believe in meaning.
In practice, this can look like: a small knot in a handwoven scarf where a new thread was joined, a tiny irregularity in a pattern after many focused hours at the loom, natural variations in leather, fibres or plant dyes that no machine could ever reproduce.
These details are not flaws. They are the signature of the person who made the piece — and the sign that it was created slowly, carefully and with human intention.
We value all of it. This is the authenticity we’ve been looking for — and we hope you feel the same.
Every piece at SoRarePieces is hand-selected. Some we discover while travelling. Others grow from close collaborations with small ateliers, social initiatives or independent workshops. What matters to us is not only that a piece is beautiful — but that it makes sense.
Many of our items support the people who create them in a very direct way: women who are rebuilding their lives and need their own income, or artisans who, through initiatives like the World Food Programme, found new perspectives in times when even food was scarce. Today, they proudly transform what once helped them survive.
Our products are allowed to carry traces — in their material, their shape, their story.
Some are not perfect.
And they shouldn’t be.
Because this is not about mass production.
It’s about meaning.
And one more thing: People say Kathrin has a certain eye. And when she’s out in the world with that eye, it usually doesn’t take long until someone says, “This could be something.”
Let’s be honest: we love shopping too. And yes — sometimes it can be loud, colourful and full of glitter, and that’s perfectly fine. But there’s another kind of shopping joy.
Our pieces don’t come from factory halls, assembly lines or low-wage production. They are made individually, often according to our own ideas, and always with time, skill and meticulous handwork. We keep an open-book communication with our partners. We know exactly what raw materials and labour cost — and once we understand that, we don’t negotiate them down.
We meet each other fairly and respectfully. This means every piece carries the value of fair work — and sometimes the courage to start again. Many of our makers live in regions where resources are scarce — but ideas, resilience and pride are abundant.
Our prices reflect all of this: the material, the hours of craft, the transport, the fair compensation — and yes, also our own work for marketing, storytelling, shipping and visibility, which can be significant.
We’re not doing this to get rich.
We’re doing it because we believe in these people, their skills and their traditions.
We want them — and their pieces — to be seen.
Not because they are perfect,
but because they matter.
Yes, absolutely. We’re happy to arrange direct visits if you’re interested in traveling — for example to the Turkana region in Kenya, or to Northern Thailand to watch the weavers at work.
Social projects in Bangkok are also worth visiting, and we support them in different ways. You’ll find more about this soon in our Journal.
Sometimes colors appear slightly different depending on the device you’re using.
We do our best to photograph all products as true to the original colors as possible, but small variations can still occur for technical reasons.

In general: yes, we’d love that. We really do.
But the truth is: we live very far apart — even though we’ve been close friends for more than 20 years and are basically family by now.
So you’d have to travel to Thailand, Spain, Germany or the Caribbean. And no, we’re not on holiday there — we actually live and work in these places. With rent, bills, little aches and pains, and occasionally even bad weather… but also with so many things we’re deeply grateful for: people, cultures, stories, mindsets, lovely language chaos… and, of course, the “rare pieces” we discover along the way.
No, SoRarePieces is available exclusively online. We don’t operate a physical store, and pick-ups from our storage locations aren’t possible.
But who knows — never say never, right? 😉
We hope this FAQ already answers most of your questions?
